October 2021

Program: Quilted Fabric Postcards

Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at 7:00 PM via Zoom

A huge shoutout to Jenni Smith who joined us from her home in the UK in July 2021. She talked about her new book, Quilting with Liberty Fabrics, and let us peek into the historic Liberty of London archives. The book is available through Amazon as well as Morris Textiles, if you are interested in a copy for yourself.

In August 2021 we had Veruschka Zarate from Pride and Joy Quilting talk to us about her journey into foundation paper piecing. If you missed it, check out her website, prideandjoyquilting.com, with her AMAZING foundation paper pieced works of art.

October brings us Sarah Ruiz, a quilter and aerospace engineer living in Houston, Texas, to talk about her journey into the world of quilted postcards (just in time to start thinking of the holidays).

She has been sharing slices of her life online since the late 1990s so her blog covers a lot of ground, from 20-year-old college student to 40+ years old and married with kids! These days she writes mostly about her quilting and family life.

Her quilts have been displayed at shows including QuiltCon and the International Quilt Festival, and her quilts and patterns have been featured in publications including QuiltCon Magazine, Curated Quilts, and Make Modern. Many patterns have been published by Bluprint and the Modern Quilt Guild, and are available for purchase through her Etsy shop.

We are excited to talk with her this month!

Christine’s Chatter

It was wonderful to see so many of you at our September membership meeting in person and not on a flat screen. I’ve missed the feeling of meeting in person and hopefully this is just a taste of our meetings for the future.

By the time you read this, our quilt show will be a memory. Thank you to the myriad of people who make this happen every two years. A big shoutout to our chairs, Madge Pierce and Barb Jolley! The planning for this show was probably one of the most difficult in our history, but with perseverance and determination, we pulled it off! You, the members, need to give yourselves a big pat on the back for all of the work you’ve done, not just in making the pieces to show, but to fill in where needed. Now, the planning for the 2023 show begins.

I fear this article is filled with many announcements, so get your calendars out because there is much to remember. If you’re like me, if it’s not on the calendar, you’ll miss out.

Our October 19th meeting will be virtual as we have a speaker contracted for a virtual meeting. The drawing for the raffle quilt will be done that night at a location in Lake Bluff. We will have the opportunity to meet in person on October 26th for a sew-in at the church. This has been really fun to meet together and just gab and stitch.

November 9th will be the quarterly Board meeting at my house.

Our November membership meeting will be on November 16th and will be virtual as we have a virtual speaker. No sew-in in November.

December’s meeting will be a week earlier than usual as our regular meeting falls in the week of Christmas. But the big news is that we will meet in person on December 14th. The church has given permission for us to have our traditional holiday meal together! I am looking for volunteers to plan a catered meal. Our members can provide the desserts and the beverages. No sew-in in December.

The January 2022 meeting will be our Brown Bag Hustle chaired by Donna Fitzgerald. Now that the show is behind us, it’s time to clean out your sewing space and donate things to be bought by someone else that wants your stuff! Kind of like a garage sale with all proceeds going to the guild.

Summary:

October 19, virtual guild meeting and raffle quilt drawing
October 26, sew-in at the church
November 9, Board meeting, my house
November 16, virtual guild meeting
No sew-in for November
December 14, Annual Holiday Party. Looking for volunteers for catered meal and program
No sew-in for December
January 18, 2022, meeting in person – Brown bag Hustle

Enjoy the beauty of fall and your loved ones. I would say, get ready to hunker down and quilt, but I know some of you need a little break after getting everything ready for the show.

All my best,

Christine Tindell, President

Quilt Show Thank You

Barb and I want to thank our committee chairs for the wonderful job they did to provide us with a successful show. Thanks to everyone who helped with all the jobs that had to be done. It was great to see so many visitors come in, excited to experience a live show. We especially want to thank Sue and Joel Minster for organizing the set-up and take-down of the show. Well done! The best part this year was not having to move the equipment and to be able to provide lunches for everyone. It was a challenge to get to the point of actually having a show, but we are very glad that we persevered and met our goal.

Remember that we still have a couple of weeks to sell tickets for the Raffle Quilt. The total is over $5500 so far.

Again, Thank You All!

Madge Pierce and Barb Jolley, Quilt Show Co-Chairs

Dedication of Lake Bluff 125th Anniversary Quilt

Lk Bluff quilt dedication.jpg

On Saturday, September 18, 2021, the Village Quilters’ quilt commemorating Lake Bluff’s 125th anniversary was dedicated in a ceremony at the Lake Bluff Public Safety Building. Mark Dewart, chair of the 125th celebration committee, chaired the event. Donna Derstadt, Kate Klein, Barb Jolley, Feather Schroeder, Madge Pierce, and Linda Spring represented the Guild at the ceremony. Linda said a few words about how we planned and constructed the quilt. She explained some of the images representing Lake Bluff’s seasonal activities. The Village mounted the quilt professionally in a large Plexiglas box, allowing everyone to examine it up close without touching it. The quilt hangs in the Public Safety Building, next to the fire station, and just west of the Methodist Church where we meet. Everyone should stop by to see it.
