Program: Content, Concepts, and Quilts by Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill

Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at 7:00 PM via Zoom

Thank you to Sarah Ruiz who shared her 100 Days project with us last month – I have supplies on order so I can start my postcards for the holidays! Be sure to follow her on Instagram for more ideas and inspiration @saroy.

This month we have Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill coming from Whole Circle Studio. I am so excited she was able to make room in her busy schedule to join us for a lecture and a workshop.

Sheri’s lecture is titled “Content, Concepts, and Quilts: Approaching Quilting as a Graphic Designer”. She will talk about the creative process that she puts into her award-winning quilts. The workshop will be two half-day sessions on Saturdays in November and December. It is based on her Double Friendship Knots quilt. It uses foundation paper piecing and needle turn applique to create an amazing scrappy block suitable for a mini quilt, wall hanging, or pillow. It can also be adapted into a larger project! More details are available on the Workshop listing, and you can register online.

In December and January we will be meeting in person for events at the church – keep checking the site for information as it comes available.

Christine’s Chatter

The quilt show is now in our rearview mirror. It was a monumental task in a time where we have had to adjust to so many things. I was totally gobsmacked over the incredible works of art displayed. Also, the fact that we had the show taken down by 6 pm was nothing less than a miracle. Thank you all for the work that you have done in making this show the best ever. (Don’t we say that every two years?)

I was not able to attend the October meeting as my husband and I were travelling from Maryland after spending time with our family and celebrating our granddaughter’s second birthday. I was actually home about 30 minutes prior to the start of the meeting, but chasing a two-year-old for over a week is very tiring for this lady and I was in bed by 8:00 that night. I did hear great things about the speaker. Thank you, Marti, for standing in for me.

We will have our November meeting on the 16th via Zoom. Our December meeting will be one week earlier on December 14th and we will meet IN PERSON at the church. A committee has been formed for our annual holiday party. Please contact Carrol Stovold, Celia Stratman, Sharon Pierluissi, or me if you would like to help. We would love to have two more people help. A catered meal is planned along with some games and fun activities.

There will not be a sew-in for November or December at the church as the dates coincide with the holidays.

January brings us our Brown Bag Hustle (silent auction) for all of those things that you hang onto but haven’t used in a very long time. Trust me, someone will think your junk is their treasure. In addition, our guild won a prize from Quilter’s Dream batting for submitting the most quilts for their Hopes and Dreams Challenge benefitting ALS. All of these items will be a part of the auction, so you don’t want to miss it. This meeting will be in person.

November brings feelings of thankfulness. This year, I am thankful for my health and the health of my family. I am thankful for all of the friends I have made in this guild over the years. I am thankful for a hobby that calms my spirit and allows me to create.

Have a blessed and thankful November,

Christine Tindell, President

Quilt Show Wrap-up

(Editor’s note: photographs from the show are now on the Quilt Show web page — just scroll down a bit!)

We would like to thank each and every member who stepped up to make ours a fantastic quilt show. We couldn’t have done it without you. We have recovered from the two years of planning and achieving our goal, and everything has been put back in the “box” for those who will create the next great quilt show. I have decided that after three shows, I will not be chair again. Barb is also going on to other projects. Think it over! We have made a detailed timeline for the whole process, as well as all information needed to accomplish what is necessary. We have provided many notes to help you do the job.

NOW is the time to start the process of creating the next opportunity quilt. It needs to be completed by early 2023.

Over the next few weeks all committee chairs will be writing up copious notes for their binders, to explain how the job was done and any needs to do the job: volunteers, tables, materials, signs and moneys. We will be having our wrap-up meeting on November 8th, to go over reports and suggestions for the next show. Some chairs may want to share their experience with members at the November Guild meeting. The results of the show, that we have gotten the final numbers on, will be presented at that time as well.

The lucky winner of our gorgeous raffle quilt is Noreen Nedza of Grayslake. Ruffled Roses from the Village was presented to her at the Grayslake Farmers Market, where she bought her tickets. It was a perfect day for Noreen and her friends to help her celebrate.

Quilt Show – Boutique summary

The boutique at this year’s quilt show was very busy and productive! 398 products were sold for almost $5000. 171 donated products sold for $1098, while nine member-vendors sold 227 products and donated over $500 to the Guild. Member-vendor checks totaling almost $3000 were mailed out in late October.

This year credit card sales accounted for more than $3200 in sales, while cash and check sales accounted for over $1600 in sales. Once taxes were paid to the state, the Guild made between $1500-$1600.

Highlights of this year’s Boutique included quilt racks at the end of each table to showcase products and hanging items for sale on the black curtains to attract customers. Donated items were priced and tagged by the Boutique Committee of Judi Young, Laura Partridge and Barbara Peterson. Table runners, mug rugs and microwave bowls were hot items in the Boutique.

A big thank you to Barb Jolley for her help with the new cash register, Margaret Martin for being on call to help with the Square Reader, and Donna Derstadt for helping get the Square Reader up and running correctly both days. Thanks also to Laura Partridge and Barbara Peterson for helping to organize and run the Boutique during the show and to all members who either donated items to the Boutique, were member-vendors in this year’s Boutique, or volunteered to help in the Boutique at this year’s show. It definitely took the Village to make this year’s Boutique a success!

Quilt Show – Quilt Appraisals

Thank you to everyone who signed up for one or more quilt appraisals at our wonderful quilt show. I hope you found the appraisal process interesting and will plan to have more quilts appraised at our future shows.

On another note: Sandy Schweitzer wanted me to pass along vital information regarding the labels we put on our quilts. The following applies to all quilts we have created during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please label your quilts completely (as you would normally) and add this to the label: “Pandemic Quilt 2020 or 2021”. This is very important information for historians who will be studying this time period.

Quilts for Sale

Sandy Schweitzer conducted three appraisals for a woman who would like to find a good home for her great grandmother’s three Double Wedding Ring quilts. One quilt has 24” diameter rings, circa 1925. The other two quilts are identical with 17” diameter rings, circa 1935. All three quilts are in good condition.

If you are interested and want to get in touch with the owner of these quilts, please contact Judy Hillebrand to get the seller’s contact information.

Iron Quilter Challenge

The Iron Quilter Challenge is coming. I will be distributing bags of fabric starting at the December meeting. Bags will be available any time after that by contacting me. Rules for the challenge will be distributed with the bags of fabric. Your finished quilt must be at the April 2022 meeting for voting and donation. Be creative and have fun!

Liz Greenhill, Service Committee

Village Quilters Iron Quilter Challenge 2022 Rules

  1. A quilter (or group of quilters) will be given a bag of mismatched fabric to use in their quilt.

  2. You do not have to use all the fabric, but you must use a majority of it.

  3. You do not need to use the entire piece of fabric, but a big enough piece to represent each particular fabric in the bag.

  4. Quilts can be made by one person or by a group of people; i.e., some Bees will make one quilt.

  5. Quilts do not have to be made from a bag of Iron Quilter fabric; a quilter may prefer to use their own fabric. Quilters not using a bag of “Iron Quilter” fabric will not be included in the contest, but the quilt can still be donated.

  6. Quilts can be any size. Since Staben House is for women and children, quilters may make smaller quilts for the kids or babies.

  7. All eligible finished quilts must be presented at the April meeting.

  8. Quilts will be voted on by the members of the guild, and the winner will be awarded at the end of the meeting.

  9. All quilts will be donated at the end of the April meeting.

  10. Be creative and have fun!

  11. All quilts will be donated to Eddie Washington Center and Staben House.
