Program: Be the Best Quilter You Can Be

Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 7:00pm via Zoom

Thank you to Robin Long of Robin Ruth Designs for her lecture and workshop teaching us her innovative approach for making Mariner’s Compass blocks using strip piecing and her specialized ruler. It was fascinating to see the variety of quilts she has created with the Mariner’s Compass as a design element.

We will be meeting via Zoom again in July featuring Karen Brown, host of the YouTube channel Just Get It Done Quilts with over 250k subscribers! Weekly, she shares her quilting tips, tricks and strategies to help you tidy up your sewing space, use up your stash and deal with your UFOs so that you can make the quilts that YOU want to make.

Karen will be presenting her program, Be the Best Quilter You Can Be. As quilters, we are often overwhelmed. We have so much fabric and so many patterns, yet we struggle to complete our projects. So how do we get back to a time of guilt-free joy with our hobby? Well, stick with Karen and she’ll show us how to do it!

Upcoming Workshops:

JULY: Quilting with Rulers

Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 9:00am – In Person

DK Studios has created a new line of rulers and templates to allow you to create stunning designs and teaches you how to use them. Using the correct tools and techniques, allow quilting with rulers to be fun and creative.

Join us for a hands-on class with an instructor who has been free motion quilting for years and loves ruler work. There will be stitched samples of all the rulers & templates for you to review. There will be marking templates, marking utensils and lots of templates for you to try out. You will receive an instructional handout to take home.

AUGUST: Sewing with Kids!

Just a reminder that the August Workshops will be Tuesday, August 9 and Thursday, August 11 – the week before our August meeting. Check out the details under workshops. This would be a fun activity for you to share with that young person in your life before they head back to school.

OCTOBER: Julia McLeod - Starting with Silk

Check out the Silk Tie Table at the Brown Bag Hustle in August. We have received donations of silk ties that will be available for purchase for a nominal fee that will benefit the guild.

Christine’s Chatter

Seeing the Mariner’s Compass block done with strip piecing took a lot of the fear of this technique away. Robin Long of Robin Ruth designed a fabulous ruler to make it more precise. I trust that those who have taken the workshop have some beautiful projects to show us.

Our June meeting attendance was a little low, but I can understand why. There is so much more traveling happening this summer compared to the past two summers. May your vacation travel this year be healthy and happy!

July will be a zoom meeting again due to the speaker but we will meet in person in August for our annual Brown Bag Hustle. Bring your castoffs and someone will deem them a treasure! I have a small pile started.

Just a reminder, all quilts that will be in the 2023 Quilt Show must be completed one year from now! That sounds like a lot of time but in quilt years, it’s only about three months! I hope you are planning and working on things for the show next October. I’m really excited about the Red and White Quilts.

Stay cool and enjoy July.
I’m feeling blessed to be an American.

Brown Bag Hustle Returns!

The Ways and Means Committee is thrilled to confirm the return of the Brown Bag Hustle at our August 16 Meeting!

What Is A Brown Bag Hustle?

It is a fun and adventurous evening where you donate unused articles from your sewing room and/or stash and purchase more from the Hustle to take their place. What makes it adventurous is that you just MIGHT find a hidden jewel that turns into a prized possession!

Participants purchase reasonably priced tickets and drop them into the brown bags placed next to the items that the participant is hoping to win. After an adequate “shopping time”, the winning tickets are drawn!

This year’s Hustle starts by dropping off the articles you want to donate at 5:00 p.m., August 16, prior to an early meeting start time at 6:00 p.m. The early start time gives everyone an opportunity for plenty of previewing and shopping.

The collection of very useful items already consists of vintage finished quilt tops, many fat quarters, nursery and children fabrics, laces, unfinished knit and hand work projects. We still need more items, of course! We’ll take such things as your usable lamps, quilt frames and carriers too.

Please help us make this a huge success by bringing guests with you. The guest fee has been waived making it a great “Girls Night Out” event!

For more information, please contact Donna Fitzgerald.

Historical News!

It’s time to gear up for the Ruby Anniversary (40 years) of the Village Quilters. Your help is needed to identify pictures and events from the archives, collect members’ stories and/or anecdotes, and contribute missing pieces of information.

We are aiming for a year-long celebration, starting with the December Social and culminating in the October 2023 Quilt Show. To those of you who have already volunteered, my heartfelt thanks go out to you! If you haven’t volunteered yet but are interested in helping discover and celebrate the rich history of our guild, we would love to have you join us. The more memories we capture, the richer the history. We’re counting on your support.

We will begin our journey of discovery in July. Volunteers, be watching for an email from me as to when and where we will be meeting.

Kearstie Grenier, Guild Historian
