Program: Modern Mariner’s Compass – Strip Pieced

Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at 7:00pm via Zoom

Thank you to Deb Lindahl for sharing her beautiful quilt of 100 dresses and many of the stories that each dress represented at our May meeting. Deb is a wonderful storyteller, and it was so interesting to relive over 100 years of history through her family’s memories captured in her quilts. It was so nice to be meeting in person for a program after two years of online presentations.

In June we will have an online meeting and workshop presented by Robin Long of Robin Ruth Designs.  What started as a quest to make a Mariner’s Compass quilt for her submarine officer husband became an idea in 1992 that Robin used to launch Robin Ruth Design in January 2015.

In the program Robin will give a detailed overview of the modern technique and projects using Robin Ruth Design’s system of rulers, books, and patterns for STRIP PIECED mariner’s compass blocks and variations. Robin will share how she is bringing the mariner’s compass block into the 21st century with her modern technique and projects for how you can create your own modern mariner’s compass project. Come see lots of quilts and get inspired to give this new method a try!

In the workshop, join Robin and learn all the compass basics for making either a Skinny Robin or Fat Robin mariner’s compass block. Once you learn how to use her rulers and strip-piecing technique, you will be free to move on to one of the many patterns and projects made using this ruler system.

Students get to choose which kind of compass they will make – Skinny Robin or Fat Robin. We will make an 18” compass block and finish it into a block using the No Circle Finishing Octa-Compass Method.

If you are interested in attending the workshop, see the workshop supply list for information on ordering the required ruler and book.

Christine’s Chatter

It was such a blessing to meet together in person in May! There were representatives from Lurie Children’s Hospital Foundation present to receive quilts made for one of their many fundraisers. Many of our members have family members or friends who have been touched by this hospital. Again, I am moved by the generosity of our members and the beautiful quilts made.

We actually had in-person Show and Tell! As always, I am amazed at the talent in our group.

Deb Lindahl was a delight as she shared her quilt “100 Dresses and 100 Stories”. Everyone was riveted by her stories. We vacillated between howls of laughter and tears. It was a good reminder to tell our children our stories and those of our ancestors.

This month we will meet virtually and will have a virtual workshop. Hope to see all of your smiling faces on Zoom.

These days I am torn between working in the yard or sewing. Due to the recent rainy days, I haven’t tackled all of the weeds but it has afforded me time to sew and stitch. I hope you have had time to do the same.

May your garden be weed free and your bobbin always full,

Christine

Quilts for Lurie

Very special thanks to Linda Spring, Enid Mattimiro, Lorraine Potts, Peggy Shemenauer, Erica Jarrett, Nancy Zamor, and Barbara Schober, who created six spectacular quilts for Lurie Children’s Hospital Foundation fundraisers! The quilts were presented to Lynne Worsham, Foundation Executive, and Kathy Grumm, Project Coordinator, at the May membership meeting. The creative design layouts, stunning color palettes, and excellent workmanship by these members generated quite the conversation — and for such a good cause. Lurie Children’s Hospital is world famous for providing cutting edge care for all children, and the Lurie Foundation raises funds to insure the hospital has the facility, personnel, equipment, and treatments they need to do this. Several members, including our speaker, had personal connections with Lurie Children’s, and have experienced first-hand the healing powers of this special hospital. Thank you to Linda, Enid, Lorraine, Peggy, Erica, Nancy, and Barbara for your generous and creative contribution!

Quilt Show 2023 – A Call for Red & White Quilts!

October 2023 will mark the 40th year of Village Quilts of Lake Bluff/Lake Forest. In honor of our Ruby Anniversary, we are going to celebrate by hanging a collection of red and white quilts in the 2023 quilt show!

We need you to help us build the collection! If you start this month, you will have one year to complete a red and white quilt in time for the show. While many red and white collections feature traditional blocks and designs, you should feel free to let your creative juices flow. Traditional, modern, scrappy, or applique, the choice is yours! Make any size — bed, lap, wall — so long as it is red and white.

We will also include heritage quilts in the collection. Perhaps you have a family quilt, or one you made years ago, or a quilt you purchased. We want to include them, too.

Join in the Ruby Anniversary celebration! More information will follow as we get nearer to the show date.
