Program: Align Your Free Motion Quilting Stars

Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at 7:00 PM via Zoom

Bike quilt.jpg

I feel like I keep saying the same thing over and over, “how is it ___ already?” But here we are, in May…already!

We are pleased to welcome Karen Miller of Redbird Quilt Co. back to our guild to talk about her passion for Free Motion Quilting (FMQ). In her lecture, she will “Align Your Free Motion Quilting Stars” and then teach us Quilter’s Doodles the following Saturday, May 22. There is still room in the workshop and time to get everything you need. Karen is an amazing instructor so please consider joining us.

Karen put together a Quilter’s Doodles Workshop Kit for the class for your convenience, but it is not necessary to purchase it for the class. Be sure to use the “lakebluff15” discount code for an extra 15% off everything on her website.

Our June speaker is Annie Smith from Annie Smith Designs. She will be talking about how technology has invaded our sewing rooms and why that is not a bad thing. Annie’s class on Saturday, June 19 will be all about machine applique.

We will be using her book, The Ultimate Applique Guidebook, available through Amazon or Annie’s site. Annie will also have an optional kit available on her website shortly.

In July, Jenni Smith will be joining us from her home in the UK. She will be talking about her new book, Quilting with Liberty Fabrics. The book is available through Amazon as well as Morris Textiles, if you are interested in a copy for yourself.

May is definitely a transition month, isn’t it? The world is blooming, the grass is green and the weeds are coming up. My husband and I spent several hours in the yard today for the first time this year. There is so much cleaning up to do. I was imagining when the pots, veggies, and new perennials are planted and I fuss over them until the first frost. May is also when we enter into summer barbecues, festivals and preparing for our quilt show in the fall.

I was thrilled that so many of you “showed up” for our annual meeting in April. The new Board was installed, revised bylaws voted in and the budget for 2021-2022 was presented.

Please vote to approve the new budget on the Members Only page on our website. The proposed budget is accessible through the orange link, 2021-2022 budget. To cast your vote, please enter your first name, last name, and email address and select whether you vote to approve or reject the proposed budget. Votes may be cast from now through Friday, May 14, 2021.

Join me in welcoming Jocelyn Galloway as Treasurer, Donna Derstadt as Assistant Treasurer and Linda Spring and Enid Mattimiro for Future Programs to the Village Quilters Board for the coming year of 2021-2022. To top off the evening, quite a few people shared their favorite blocks or what they are presently working on that they love.

I am preparing quilts for submission for the show. I know not everything can be completed before the deadline in mid-July. Wouldn’t it be great if we had too many quilts submitted for the show? Quarantine has certainly provided us sewing and quilting time.

I trust you have renewed your membership for the coming year. We have always had a strong guild and this past year has certainly presented many challenges to stay connected. Thank you to Kate Brennan who has arranged our Zoom meetings. I’m very excited that we may be able to meet in person sometime this summer. It may look a little different as all of our future programs are virtual. We as a Board are looking into a way to meet in person and virtually at the same time. I’m not much of a techie, but a few people have some ideas.

I have been in contact with one of the trustees at the church. They are having a meeting sometime in early May to make decisions on how groups can come back to the church and what that will look like. Please know that we will not jump in without thinking it through. We certainly want to start meeting again in the safest way possible.

So, welcome to May! May your seams be straight, your weeds be few, and your burgers delicious.

Quilt of Valor

We have reached the endpoint for making blocks! For one of my final blocks, I made a Duck Tracks quilt block. A pattern for a 6” finished Duck Tracks block can be found on the Generations Quilt Patterns website.

Hopes and Dreams Challenge

A big THANK YOU to all the quilters who have made 67 quilts so far! I will be accepting quilts through the end of May, with a mailing date of June 1st. Great job everyone!

More information can be found on the Village Quilters Service page.

Boutique Virtual Sew-In on June 5

All members are invited to join our first Virtual Boutique Sew-In on Saturday, June 5 from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM, hosted by Barbara Schober.

Judi Young, Laura Partridge and Barbara Peterson will do a Show & Tell of items to make for the Boutique as well as live demos. You are free to use your own patterns for potholders, mug rugs, microwavable bowl caddies, coasters, placemats, simple table runners or ornaments.

Pinterest and YouTube are great resources!

The Zoom link will be posted in the Members Only page of the Village Quilters website, and on the Village Quilters (Members Only) Facebook page. We hope to see you there!

Quilts from the Village Show 2021

The Quilt Show committees are very busy getting ready for our show in October. It is exciting to see that the Libertyville Sports Complex will be opening July 1, under the new management company, Canlan Sports. I will be in contact with them as soon as possible. Their contract was just finalized last Tuesday, so it may be a bit of time before I can meet with the manager. These delays are an inconvenience that slow things down, but we will be ready to go. There are many options and opportunities for projects to make for the Silent Auction and Boutique.

Raffle Quilt Travel Update and Sewing and Quilt Expo

The Raffle Quilt Travel committee has been very busy identifying various places where we can show our quilt in person and in images with other guilds and quilt shops. Lake Bluff has notified us that the raffle license has been approved and a copy was sent to us for our files. We are now selling tickets online!

We have secured a booth space at the Sewing and Quilt Expo being held on June 3, 4, and 5 of 2021 at the Schaumburg Convention Center. Barb Jolley and Laurie Waldron will be in the booth all day Thursday working with a computer selling tickets by Apple Pay, credit card, or cash to anyone wishing to purchase.

We need your help in staffing the booth on Friday and Saturday. The hours are 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM on Friday and 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM on Saturday. These break down into two roughly 4-hour periods per day which we are calling first half and last half time periods. We feel that there should be two persons in the booth for each period so we are asking for four volunteers for Friday and four volunteers for Saturday. Please contact Barb Jolley or Dorothy Roderick to sign up to help out with this fun-filled effort.

Remember too that if you volunteer you are able to get in free. General Attendance for one day is $6 if purchased online or $13 at the door.

Boutique at the Quilt Show

The Boutique invites members to sell their original quilted items in the 2021 Quilt Show Boutique as Member-Vendors. Member-Vendors have always made the Boutique special and have been quite profitable for those members who have participated – 85% of each sale goes to the member, while 15% goes to the Guild.

If you are interested in being a Member-Vendor or knowing more about this opportunity, contact Judi Young, Laura Partridge, or Barbara Peterson.

Art Quilt Challenge – Our Lives Are Woven Together

July 13th, the deadline for quilt entries, is fast approaching.

art-quilt-challenge2.jpg

I hope a lot of you are working on your 12” x 12” mini quilts for the Art Quilt Challenge. If you’ve already completed your quilt, please take a photo and share it on the Village Quilters (Members Only) Facebook page. Your quilt might be just the inspiration another member is needing to create their own challenge mini quilt.

There is a new post on the Art Quilt Challenge page. It’s about creating a mini quilt that makes a statement about how you perceive your life to be woven together with others and/or issues important to you. The theme, requirement and specifications for the challenge can be found in the challenge section of this site.

Feel free to email or call me if you have any questions.

Julie Milne, Art Quilt Challenge Chairperson
