The most requested category from our recent survey was “Create a Bargello Quilt”. You asked, and we listened! We are excited for Nancy Roelfsema’s lecture, which will include “Great Tips Every Quilter Needs to Know” and “How an On-Point Setting Adds So Much Pizazz to a Quilt!” She loves teaching and has over 250 videos on onpoint-tv.com.

Deanne Eisenman of Snuggles Quilts will teach a workshop on wool applique. The class will include detailed instructions from an expert on preparing, cutting, and stitching the wool applique.

Detailed information about the workshops and supply lists is posted on the Village Quilters webpage.

Here are a couple of photos from our recent workshop with MJ Kinman which highlight the spacious and light-filled work area at Faith Lutheran. Our workshops are a joy to attend!

Christine’s Chatter

Our May meeting was energetic and fun. It was so good to have such great attendance for MJ Kinman’s lecture and trunk show. I was mesmerized by her technique and her eye for color and value in all of her quilts.  I’ve heard from several who attended her workshop and they agreed that it was a challenging but enjoyable method to learn.

June’s meeting brings us Nancy Roelfsema and back to the basics for quilting. It is always a good thing to break bad habits and improve our skills. Her workshop will feature Bargello quilts. I made a Bargello way back in my quilting journey and it was donated to a silent auction. Maybe I should dive in again?

We will have another opportunity quilt at our next meeting as Faithful Circle Quilters in Downers Grove will be attending. Their show will be this fall.

Many of you attended local quilt shows in the past month. I’m definitely looking forward to our show in October. There are so many ways you can get involved. Pam is looking for people to travel our raffle quilt in the coming months. See our Facebook page to follow the raffle quilt to farmer’s markets and other guilds.

The weather has been beautiful, just a little too beautiful as we are in dire need of rain.  By this time most of the flowers are planted but a shower or two would really help.

See you in June!

In Memoriam – Liz Greenhill

Sadly, VQ member Liz Greenhill passed away on May 29 from pancreatic cancer. She was active as our Service Chairman and was the driving force behind all of the Quilts for Ukraine that we recently donated. She was also active in other areas in our guild and was one of the "Stichin' Sisters" meeting weekly in Park Ridge.

Liz is survived by her husband, Woody (who received a Quilt of Valor at our last quilt show), 4 children, and many grandchildren.

She was a great lady and a great friend.

Warmly,
Cheryl Mercy

Quilt Show News!

June Quilt Show News

It’s June! What might you be doing this month to support the guild and the 2023 VQ show which is coming up on October 20 & 21? Here are two ideas - track your activities and get our bookmarks into circulation!

Participation Tracker

If you were in attendance at May’s general VQ meeting you got an introduction to the Participation Tracker. If you weren’t at the meeting, you can download and print your own tracker or pick up a a copy at the next guild meeting.

Keep track of the ways you are supporting the show. For example, you can earn points for entering a red and white quilt, something in denim and lace for the Art Quilt Challenge, donating to the Silent Auction, donating to the Boutique, or working shifts at the show. Another way to get a point is to enter your personal quilts early (by June 15th) instead of waiting until the July 15th deadline. Check the tracking form for other ways to earn points!

We are offering this activity to say THANK YOU for your efforts and participation in all the ways we ask you to make our October show happen! Fire up your competitive spirit to earn points for the many ways you contribute toward making our show a resounding success! Prizes will be awarded!

Bookmarks

The bookmarks are in! Thank you to Margaret Martin for creating graphics and designing the beautiful bookmarks. Thank you to Jocelyn Galloway for photographing the raffle quilt.

The bookmarks are gorgeous, but they are useless if they are not in circulation. All members will be given bookmarks to share with friends and family. Challenge yourself to give out at least 20 bookmarks. Hand them out in person as you invite people to the show. Pop them in an envelope and send to friends, etc. If you need more than 20, just ask!

Please note that the price of admission to the show has been raised to $10 with no senior discount available. Children 12 and under admitted for free. I apologize that this information wasn’t shared earlier.

If you have questions about the show, please don’t hesitate to ask! My email and phone number are on the member roster. I’d love to hear from you! Keep sewing!

Have You Started Submitting Your Quilts for the Show?

Only 45 days remain for submitting your quilts! We challenge everyone to submit at least one of their quilts before the June meeting!

The deadline is July 15, 2023 for all quilts to be hung and August 15, 2023 for QOV quilts that will not be hung.

You must enter a photo to complete your submission.

  • Unlike previous years when you emailed your photo, this year you will submit your photo using the online form.

  • You may submit your photo when you complete the entry form OR at a later date.

  • To make things easier, we have prepared these instructions to help you upload your photos.

Need help submitting your photos?  We are planning three “photo sessions” to assist in submitting your photos:

  • June Meeting: We will be at the church at 6:30 pm to take pictures before the meeting.

  • Two sessions at Cook Memorial Library – details TBD.

  • Make sure to submit your entry form before your photo session!

How Do I Submit My Quilt?

Step 1: Download and review the Checklist to ensure you have all the information required to submit your quilt, including your Quilt Story.

Step 2: Submit a separate entry form for each quilt.

Step 3: Check that you have received an email confirmation from “VQ Show Cataloging” for each submission and that all the information is correct.

Step 4: If you were not able to attach a photo when you submitted your entry, you will receive an email in 5-7 days that has the following: From: villagequilterslblf@gmail.com,   Subject: VQ Show 2023 – Entry # Photo Instructions

This email will include further instructions and a link where you can upload your photograph.

Quilt Show Boutique

We can’t wait to see what you are creating to sell in the Boutique! If you need ideas, we have suggestions!  Orphan blocks can be made into table runners, pot holders, place mats or small quilts. Please include all seasons and holidays. We have patterns for adult and child bibs. There will be a workshop August 16th when we can all sew together, so mark your calendars! You can also still sign up to be a member vendor.

Please let us know what you will be donating so we don’t have too many duplicates.

Fall Quilt Retreat

The Village Quilters retreat will be held on Friday, September 29, through Sunday, October 1, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Mettawa. If you haven’t signed up, go to our website and check to see if there are openings. If the website indicates that the retreat is full, don’t dismay, just email Marti Austin and ask to be put on the wait list. In the past, several of the people on the wait list have been able to attend.

The retreat is a great time to start or finish projects, get advice, share ideas and have fun with your quilting friends. It is one of the best ways to get to know others in the guild.

The retreat opens at 8:00 am Friday and continues until late afternoon on Sunday.

If you want to stay at the hotel during the retreat, one, two or three nights, email Marti Austin with your room request. If you plan to share the room, please indicate who will be your roommate. The price of the room for one night is $129. If you contact the hotel directly, you may not receive this price.
