Christine’s Chatter

Spring is in the air! It has been pretty cold these past few days, but my daffodils are about three inches tall and I see patches of green everywhere. The birds are certainly in a tizzy about warmer days to come.

In lieu of a speaker at our March meeting, we had an impromptu Show and Tell. It’s always wonderful to see the varied talents and styles in our guild. I think that’s what makes us a great group. We all bring different things to the table.

April’s meeting will be so exciting as we are meeting in person at Grace United Methodist Church. Social time starts at 6:30 pm and the meeting will begin at 7:00 pm. The ground isn’t the only area that has renewal in April; we see changes in our guild every spring. This is our annual meeting and we will thank the vacating Board members and install the new Board. Your attendance is valued and the new Board needs to be voted in by you. We will be gifting our “Iron Quilter” quilts to the Staben House and the Eddie Washington Center.

We will be having an Ice Cream Social for our April meeting hosted by the outgoing Board.

April is also the month to renew your membership to the guild (see details in Membership article below).

Please read further in this newsletter as we have a few opportunities coming your way. This year is the 40th year (a Ruby anniversary) that Village Quilters has been an official organization and Kearstie is looking for ideas to celebrate it as a group. This year is also my wedding anniversary. I am doing the “Ruby Jubilee” mystery quilt in Quiltmaker because the magazine has been publishing for 40 years.

Sharon Pierluissi and Marti Austin are planning a retreat for 32 VQ members in September. Stay tuned for more details.

Donna Derstadt and Kate Klein are planning our raffle quilt for our 2023 quilt show. It promises to be a beauty. See article below and how you can help.

It will be so good to be together in person for our monthly meeting this month.

Village Quilters Anniversary

Who is 40 years old? Village Quilters began its existence forty years ago. Now it’s time to celebrate us! Anyone who would like to be involved in the committee to help plan our celebration contact Christine Tindell, Kearstie Grenier, or Marti Austin.

2023 Raffle Quilt

We are excited to begin work on our 2023 Raffle Quilt, and even more excited that it will be designed by one of our own members – Kate Klein. While she is still refining details, we can tell you that it will be very different this year – a stripy design alternating columns of pieced blocks and columns of applique.

The color palette is clear brights on black, inspired by Nancy Pearson’s “Poppies”. You can see it in more detail if you Google Nancy’s book “Floral Applique”. The photo is our color inspiration.

For the April meeting, we’re asking members to donate 2-3 prewashed fat quarters in the colors of the flowers in the photo – lights, mediums, and darks – the greater the variety, the better, according to Nancy. We’ll cut these into kits to distribute in May. We hope all members are willing to help.

Stay tuned for the quilt design big reveal!

IQI Trunk Show and Workshop this week!

Lynn Schmitt: “Mixed Medium Textiles, How to use them, Where to use them and Why”
Thursday, April 7, 2022, 7:00 pm,
Lutheran Church of Ascension, 460 Sunset Ridge Rd., Northfield

Lynn is an author and founder, owner and designer of A Different Box of Crayons quilt shop in Glen Ellyn, IL. She has designed projects for over 13 years while teaching and vending across the U.S. and Europe. Lynn is a master at mixing multiple textiles in her art. This trunk show is not to be missed. Fee for non-members is $10.

Saturday, April 9, 2022 “LOGistics”
Workshop 9 am-3 pm
Gloria Dei, 133 Pfingsten Rd, Northbrook

This workshop project of a pillow or table mat can be finished in a day. The base is wool. The accents are a mix of traditional and contemporary cottons, silks of different distinctions, batiks, home decor and wool. Each colorway is unique and includes an individual mix. Consistently there is a variety of fabric textures, weights, and sheens in each kit to illustrate how joyful this mix of textiles can be. The chain detail is done with silk.

Each kit is complete and includes the pattern. You can create either the pillow or the table mat from this kit. The pillow can be constructed in its entirety from a single kit, including front, back and binding. The table mat kit includes the binding, but not the backing.

There are 5 color options: Purple, Green, Raspberry, Blue and Rust. The cost of the workshop is $60 for non-members. Kit cost is $49.50 payable to Lynn Schmitt at the workshop.

Email ckarabush@decisionsystems.com at IQI for details about signing up.
